How Much Does AI Search Optimization Cost?

AI search optimization cost depends on how much ground the work has to cover: how many services and locations you have, how many AI tools you want tracked, how clean your website and business listings are today, how much new content you need, and how competitive your market is. A single-location business with accurate listings and solid pages needs far less work than a multi-location company whose details are scattered and out of date across the web. You’re paying for a defined set of tasks, and the size of that set sets the cost.

This guide covers what AI search optimization work includes, what makes it cost more or less, how it’s usually priced, which offers to avoid and how to tell if it’s paying off. If the terms are new to you, start with our guide to generative engine optimization (GEO), or see what our AI search optimization service covers.

What You’re Paying For in AI Search Optimization

AI search optimization, also called AEO or GEO, is the work of getting your business found, described correctly and cited by tools like Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Most engagements are built from six parts.

AI Visibility Audit

The starting point is finding out what AI tools say about you now. That means asking each tool the questions your customers ask, recording whether you’re named, whether the details are right and which sources get cited instead. It shows where the gaps are before anyone spends time fixing the wrong thing.

Entity and Listing Cleanup

AI tools pull facts from many places at once: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and other directories. When your name, address, phone number or services differ between them, it’s harder for a machine to tell they describe one business. Our guide to entity SEO explains why that matters. Cleanup means finding old and duplicate listings and making every source agree.

Indexing and Crawler Access

Each AI tool searches a different index. Google’s AI features use Google Search, Copilot uses Bing, and ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own web searches. This part of the work covers Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, sitemaps, IndexNow and a robots.txt that lets the right crawlers in. Our guide on how AI search engines choose sources lays out which crawler each tool uses.

Answer-Ready Content

Pages that state the answer near the top, use headings that match real questions and cover the follow-ups people ask are easier for an AI tool to quote. This can mean rewriting existing service pages, adding FAQ sections or building new pages for services and areas you don’t cover yet.

Schema Markup

Structured data spells out your business facts for machines. Google says no special schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that any structured data you use should match the visible text on the page. So schema work is about clarity and accuracy, not a shortcut. Our guide to schema markup covers which types fit a local business.

Tracking and Reporting

AI answers change, so the work needs a way to measure it. That usually means a fixed set of prompts checked every month across each tool, Copilot citation data from Bing Webmaster Tools, referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, and the calls and leads your marketing brings in.

What Changes the Cost of AI Search Optimization

Scope of Services and Topics

A business with three services needs fewer pages, fewer prompts to track and less content than one with thirty. Each service you want AI tools to mention you for adds questions to answer and pages to build or improve.

Number of Locations

Every physical location has its own Google Business Profile, Bing Places listing, citations, reviews and location page. Each one has to be accurate everywhere for AI tools to get it right, so adding locations multiplies the work.

Number of AI Tools and Prompts Tracked

Tracking one tool with a short list of questions is a small job. Tracking Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot across many services and areas every month is a bigger one. Answers vary between sessions, so a useful tracking set needs enough prompts to show patterns over time.

The Current State of Your Site and Entity

A site that is indexed in Google and Bing, loads its text without relying on JavaScript and has clean listings needs light setup. One with blocked crawlers, pages missing from Bing, duplicate profiles or an old address spread across directories needs cleanup before anything else can stick.

Content Needs

If your service pages are thin or bury the answer under a long intro, they need rewriting. If you have no pages for important services or areas, they need building. Content is often the largest single part of the work.

Competition in Your Market

When the businesses already named in AI answers for your services have strong websites, many reviews and plenty of mentions on other sites, it takes more work to be named alongside them. A narrow specialty with few serious competitors usually needs less.

Reporting Depth

A simple monthly summary of where you appear takes less time than a detailed report covering every tool, every prompt, competitor mentions, AI referral traffic and lead tracking. Decide what you need to see before comparing quotes.

AI Search Optimization Pricing Models

AI search optimization is usually priced in one of three ways.

  • Monthly retainer. Ongoing work: content updates, listing upkeep, review support, new pages and monthly AI visibility tracking. Good when you’re in a competitive market and want steady progress you can measure.
  • One-time projects. A defined job with a finish line, such as an AI visibility audit, a listing cleanup or a schema and crawler access fix. Good when your foundations need repair and you can handle ongoing work in-house.
  • Setup plus monthly. A setup phase to fix indexing, listings and business facts, followed by a monthly retainer to build on them. Common when there’s a lot of cleanup before ongoing work pays off.

Local Blitz offers all three, on month-to-month contracts. We don’t use cookie-cutter packages, and if AI search optimization isn’t the right fit for you, we’ll say so and point you elsewhere. If you also run ads, ad spend is paid separately and directly to Google or Meta, with our management fee kept separate. See how we structure engagements on our pricing page.

What’s Typically Included

Every plan should be built around your business, but most AI search optimization work includes:

  • An audit of what AI tools say about your business today and who they name instead.
  • Cleanup of your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and key directory listings.
  • Indexing checks in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, plus a robots.txt review.
  • Rewrites or new pages that answer customer questions directly.
  • Schema markup that matches the visible content of each page.
  • A plan for reviews and mentions on other sites.
  • Monthly tracking and a report you can read without a glossary.

Red Flags When Buying AI Search Optimization

AI search is new, which makes it easy to oversell. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Guaranteed AI citations. No one outside the AI companies controls what their tools say. A promise that ChatGPT or Google AI will recommend you is a promise no agency can keep.
  • Secret prompts or hacks. AI tools search the web and read what they find. There’s no hidden phrase that makes them name you.
  • Special AI schema. Google says no special schema is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Markup is useful when it matches the page, not as a trick.
  • Google only. Copilot uses Bing, and ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own searches. A plan that ignores everything outside Google leaves gaps.
  • No tracking method. If an agency can’t explain which prompts it checks, in which tools and how often, you can’t judge its work.
  • Identical packages for everyone. A dentist and a roofer don’t need the same plan.

How to Measure the Value of AI Search Optimization

AI visibility is harder to measure than rankings because most AI tools don’t report who they cite. Use several signals together:

  • Prompt tracking. The same customer questions, asked in each tool every month, with a record of whether you’re named, linked and described correctly.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance. A public preview report released in February 2026 that shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing, which pages, and a sample of the queries behind them (Bing Webmaster Blog).
  • AI referral traffic. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com in your analytics.
  • Search Console. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the Web search type. It isn’t broken out separately, but it shows whether your overall Google visibility is growing (Google Search Central).
  • Calls and leads. Ask new customers how they found you, and add “AI assistant” as an option on your forms.

Local Blitz reports on calls, leads and rankings alongside AI visibility, so you can see what the work is producing. If you’re worried AI answers are taking your traffic, our guide on whether AI Overviews reduce clicks explains what the research shows.

AI Search Optimization Cost vs. SEO Cost

AI search optimization builds on SEO. Most AI tools search the web before they answer, so pages that aren’t indexed or trusted are unlikely to be cited. If your SEO is already strong, AI search work adds entity cleanup, answer-ready content, Bing coverage and tracking. If it’s weak, SEO usually has to be part of the scope. Our guides to SEO pricing and local SEO cost cover those line items.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AI search optimization cost?

It depends on the scope of work, how many locations and AI tools are covered, the current state of your website and business listings, how much new content you need, and how competitive your market is. Any quote given before someone has checked what AI tools say about you today is a guess.

Is AI search optimization billed monthly?

Often, because AI answers change and tracking only means something when it’s done over time. One-time projects, such as an AI visibility audit or a listing cleanup, make sense when you only need the foundations fixed. Setup plus monthly is common when there’s a lot of cleanup before ongoing work pays off.

Do I need SEO as well as AI search optimization?

In most cases, yes. Most AI tools search the web before they answer, and Google says a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If your SEO is weak, that usually has to be part of the scope.

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT or Google AI will cite my business?

No. AI tools decide their own answers, and the sources they use can change between sessions. An agency that guarantees AI citations is promising something it doesn’t control. Ask instead how it will track your visibility and what it will report each month.

Can I do AI search optimization myself?

Some of it. Claiming your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing, verifying your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and asking customers for reviews are all free. It gets harder with several locations, messy listings, a lot of content to write or strong competitors.

Does Local Blitz require a long-term contract?

No. Our monthly work is month-to-month. We also take on one-time projects, and we don’t sell cookie-cutter packages.
